History is fractured on Proteria…
??????? BV: Before the Veil
Seldom artefacts remain of the time Before the Veil. The majority of Proteria’s religion’s concern themselves with this period, aiming to understand each of our collective origins and purpose on this planet. However, little is known for certain. Some peculiar groups have unlocked and shared some of these mysteries with us all, and it is commonly accepted now that our slice of this planet was once a part of the rest of the larger world. The all-encompassing Shimmering Veil that traps us on these lands was not always in existence, and it is not understood how or why it ever even came into being.
1 AV: The Shimmering Veil Appears
Depicted by nearly every race’s early history, no records exist without the translucent blue-pink veil that encompasses the entire continents of Auroya, Etioe, and Mahtiko – stretching from The Northern Veil Ocean to the end of The Southern Depths. This, is where history begins!
1 to 10,000 AV: The Age of Barbarism
As our ancestors rose out of their ancient homelands, the world was a harsh, cold, and uncaring place, filled with ferocious beasts and violent terrain. As cultures began to evolve and social, economic, and technological advancements occurred, most of the people of Proteria left this accursed age behind. And yet, there are still a few pockets around the world, where strength and savagery still reign supreme.
1000 to 6,000 AV: Uncovering of the Ever-Ruins
All around Proteria, the first peoples of the various races began to encounter ancient, colossal superstructures dotted around the primal landscape. With origins still undetermined, these monolithic and alien places became the new homelands for many of the races of Proteria. The first Elves discovered the gargantuan super city of Velrin (now named Huna), with its three colossal Seabridges. The Dwarves uncovered the immense city under the mountain of the same name, Olgärd. The Humans, the expansive caverns and caves of Om. The Merfolk settling in Reydel beneath the Okadia Ocean’s waves. And the Lizardfolk with their Landgate connecting the two main continents to the city of Amion and Vertnesse.
3000 to 12,000 AV: The Tsumak and Nuesailia War of Generations
With the establishment of their new homelands, the Merfolk of the Okadia Isles were surrounded by Lizardfolk on the lands of the Twin Shedat of Nuesalia, to both the east and the west. The Lizardfolk on the other hand saw the Merfolk as being, literally, in the middle of their empire. The ensuing war raged on for some millennia, with no side able to truly conquer or defeat the other. It was only brought to peace out of mutual exhaustion of warfare and fundamental changes within each’s society – in part due to the growing dominance of the Velrinian Empire.
9,453 AV: Birth of the Velrinian Empire
Protected by its natural seabridge fortifications and access to wild grain filled plains, the Elves developed the quickest of Proteria’s early races, with rapid growth on both continents Auroya and Etioe, connected by the sea spanning bridges of Velrin (now named Huna). The Arch Cultivator Los’som Velrin is crowned Empress of the Velrinian Empire and the age of the Elves began.
10,000 to 19,000 AV: The Elven Age – The Life of T’mor Dimpleroot
The coronation of a new Elven Empress, coupled with relative peace between the Okadia Isles and the Twin Shedat of Nuesalia, allowed the peoples of Proteria to enter a new era of prosperity, driven by agriculture, magic, and an embrace of nature. The elf, T’mor Dimpleroot typifies the beliefs of the era. It is in no small part due to him that so few Elven remnants can be found across the land, despite the nearly ten millennia reign of the Velrinian Empire. His teachings espoused a fervent belief in complete synergy with nature. The majority of Velrinian structures and items were made entirely out of various woods and grasses, with only the most important buildings and places being of a more lasting or manufactured material like iron or stone.
18,915 AV: The Fool King of Olgärd
The Dwarven “Fool King” Osimand Güld spent centuries constructing a perverted and twisted mockery of a city, within the enormous extinct volcanic crater of the Forgotten Forge. Upon the “completion” of his life’s madness, Osimand proclaimed to his advisors and the other Olgärd Houses to reverse the Great Forges, which would drown the ancient city with molten lava as a means of “helping to encourage” his subjects to move more hastily into his bizarre creation. The epoch’s long dynasty of House Güld met a swift end when one of Osimand’s personal guard, Augustus Aughim, executed the king upon the revelation of his wicked plot.
18,800 to 23,648 AV: Rise of House Aughim
In the wake of the Fool King’s death, the militant Aughim Clan answered the call to lead and protect Olgärd from their enemies. A strict, fascist dictatorship with forced conscription, and segregated social and ethnic classes began to form, as more aggressive and expansionists campaigns are carried out beyond the lands of Olgärd for millennia.
19,097 AV: The Slaughter of Velrin
Following years of oppression on the fringes of Proteria at the hands of the elves, the Esidian kingdom finally revolted against them. Having recently conquered their human rivals on Etioe, the Ancient Nikarian Empire, the Esidians decided to flex their new muscle by taking on the elves. Much to their, and the Elves surprise, the humans are disturbingly successful in their slaughter, banishing most of the elves of Proteria to the far reaches of the Zendifar jungles, beyond the Swallowed Mountains. Establishing a new human empire over the Elven one, the Esidians do not pay much mind to the rule of the lands of Auroya, believing them to be a “godless place”.
19,097 to ?????? AV: Masan Revolts – The Life of Hilhi
The Masani humans on Etioe, with closer ties to elven kind, reject the Esidian genocide and its religious leaders, declaring independence from the Esidian Empire. The fighting and hostilities between the Masani and Esid have never officially ceased. Hilhi, a rare Esidian half-elf arises as a cultural and spiritual leader, advocating peace through nonviolence and a celebration of differences.
21,491 AV: The First Hunarian Unification
Mostly ignored by the Esidian Empire, the clans of the “godless” Hunari Steppe are brought together to defend themselves by the kingdom of Odisio against mounting dwarven, elven, and lizardfolk aggression. Having halted their enemies through shear overwhelming numbers and strength, the unified Hunari states quickly dissolve fall back to their respective sovereign rulers.
21,517 AV: Esidian Reformations
Years of warfare and oppression finally come to a head with a complete alteration of Esidian law and society. Internally manifested, this creates the Esidian four law tiered system. The first, strictly for the Esidian homeland, 2nd for those that can live as true Esidians. The third, as a buffer from the influences of the outside world. And the fourth, where its fringe territories and colonies could operate with relative autonomy, without the worry of offending more refined Esidian Law followers.
21,550 to 23,600 AV: The Silver Age – The Life of Dhet
The new Esidian Law allows most of the world to flourish. New cities rise and fall, with substantial development in the states of the Hunari Steppe – Hallidon, Odisio, Callair, Bades, and Linde. A halfling named Dhet, influenced by the Masani and Hilhi, arises in the super city Kulsar (formerly Velrin and now named Huna). This spawns a new metropolitan society and lifestyle advocating indulgence that carries far, especially in the new Hunari States.
23,617 – 23,648 AV: Exile of House Aughim
Following nearly 4000 years of reign under the brutal and militaristic House Aughim, the Dwarves of Olgärd had reached a serious point of stagnation in their history, with most Dwarves disillusioned with their place in the world, with few seeking lives in far off lands. The Dwarven people, influenced by the new philosophies of the humans, had finally had enough and the other great Olgärdian houses revolted against House Aughim. A bloody civil war ensued for nearly three decades but ultimately, the former reign collapsed and the descendants of house Aughim were exiled from the lands of Olgärd.
23,689 AV: The Second Hunarian Unification
Following the wake of carnage from the Aughim exile, the Aughim Dwarves established a new homeland in the mountains of the Great Northern Divide. Immediately upon their arrival, they enslaved the native Gnome population, and grew fascinated with the Gnome’s abilities to create strange machines out of the metals and ores the Dwarves were already so familiar with. Starved for battle, the Dwarves commanded their enslaved Gnomes to begin creating great war machines, which they in turn used in raids against various Hunari States. It was under the Wizard Chancellor Jayme Hallidon, of the then Magocracy of Hallidon, that the Hunari states once again unified and gathered an army to f fight back against the Dwarves and their metallic machines. With the Dwarves retreating into the mountains, a shaky truce was met between them and the Hunari states, whereby Jayme Hallidon himself then declared the end of the Second Hunari Unification, seeing as it had “achieved what it had sought to achieve”.
23,776 AV: The Advent of LUX
Discovered entirely by accident in an explosion of one of Bades numerous coal mines, LUX, the apparent gemstone form of starlight, was discovered. Possessing previously unfathomable levels of power, the location and extraction method of LUX quickly became an all-consuming pursuit of several groups and nations alike, whilst others sought to discover what new inventions might be powered from it. LUX catapulted the Hunari economy into overdrive, with new inventions and uses of LUX arising daily, including the railroad, common battlewagons, tradevans, and windships. Today LUX is a highly controlled resource, predominantly by the multinational syndicate “the LUX Attendants”, though this hasn’t stopped other groups from pursuing it. Most notorious of which would be the LUXheads of the Exxo Badlands.
23,871 AV: The Third Hunarian Unification
Having enjoyed unprecedented growth with the Advent of LUX and the rise of rail and transport technology connecting many of the Hunari lands, the Hunari states once again unify. Under the guise of common economic interests and the perceived threat from both the Kingdom of Aughim and the Twin Shedat of Nuesalia, the First Overhuman of the Blessed State of Linde, Josept Tol Alazar, through means of both treaty and war, unifies the steppe, with the Republic of Hallidon resisting the longest before finally succumbing to their encompassing neighbours. With the new nation of the Unified Hunarian State established (UHS), the now unified Hunari armed forces turned their attention to the external threats of the other races around them. The LUX powered war machines would quickly show the superior capabilities of the UHS, leading directly to the 23,914 AV Peace Accords after decades of death and warfare.
23,914 AV: The Olgärd-Hunari-Nuesalia-Okadia Peace Accords
Showing uncompromising capability on the Hunari Steppe, the newly formed Unified Hunarian State dominates the regions trade and excels in warfare against the Dwarves of Olgärd, the Lizardfolk of the Twin Shedat of Nuesalia Prime, and the Merfolk of the Okadia Isles. In exchange of access to resources and stability, the Unified Hunarian State agrees to peace with the other groups, allowing them to concentrate their own war efforts on the entrenched Dwarves of the Great Northern Divide, in the Kingdom of Aughim.
23,939 AV: Anschluss of the Hunarian Unified State and the Kingdom of Aughim
Facing total annihilation, the Kingdom of Aughim forfeit their kingdom and become a vassal of the Unified Hunarian State. King Esper Aughim III’s son , Augustus Aughim II, agrees to murder his father’s lieutenants and exile his own father in a show of fealty to the Unified Hunarian State. The Dwarven forges, as well as their Gnome slaves unlock a new era of technological prowess and the advancement of LUX technologies for the Unified Hunarian State. The UHS flourishes, with growing aspirations drawing it towards the East, particularly with the Esidian empire and its super city of Kulsar (now named Huna).
23,961 AV: The Agalan Exodus
From ancient times, the Agal humans have never had a land to call their own, often joining the ranks of the lowest members of society in any lands they come to inhabit. Within the Unified Hunarian State, the inherently adept and strong Agals served in specialised labour camps dedicated to the construction of the Hunari war machine. In one such camp that focused on windships and zeppelins, several Agal leaders organised an uprising, commandeering several of the fleet’s vessels and fleeing far to the west, navigating the perilous Eshvene Pass and setting free thousands of Agal’s in the newly created Free State of Agalan on the edge of the Eshvene Desert.
23,989 AV: The Fireworks Rebellion
Hunari agents set off an immeasurable number of fireworks in the super city Kulsar during the annual Esidian Reformation festivals. Bursting overhead the parks and sky towers of the city, the explosions littered the crowded streets in millions of propaganda posters which decried:
“THE NEXT TIME WILL BE BOMB’S!
Kulsari’s, abandon your feeble Esidian ruler’s.
We promise you Safety, Strength, and Supremacy!
We are the UNIFIED HUNARIAN STATE!”
The Kulsari people revolted, storming through the capital and more than willing to finally oust their long inept leaders. The Hunari forces where welcomed to roaring cheers of the crowds as they stormed over both the Aug-Nor and Aug-Sor Seabridge’s, liberating the city from their Esidian masters. In their retreat, the Esidians destroyed the Seabridge Eta-Ea , to not be followed and slow down the UHS advancement. Shortly afterwards, the second Overhuman Lavo Hol Aalazar decided to make the super city the official capital of the Unified Hunarian State, renaming the super city of Kulsar to be forevermore known as Huna.
24,018 AV: The Firebombing of Fohua
To the complete horror of every man, woman and child in Xianyi, the Great Hunari War Machine is finally revealed. Appearing out of invisibility in the sky over the capital Fohua, the flotilla of Hunari windships appeared, dropping a plethora of alchemical, magical, and LUX infused bombs that destroy the entire city within a single hour. The Great Hunari – Esidian War begins.
